What is DHT?

DHT is a multifaceted androgen. It’s not solely hair based but involved in enlarged prostate and prostate cancer too.  Therefore, it is a well-studied molecule. Also, dihydrotestosterone is a fascinating hormone agent to study because it is responsible for male pattern balding.

As DHT is produced in the testicles it is a sex steroid. Besides, it is an androgen hormone, derived from the Greek prefix ‘andro’ which means ‘masculine’.

But firstly, let us look at hair growth. The normal hair growth consists of tree phases anagen, catagen and telogen.

  • Anagen:or the growth phase. Hairs remain in this phase up to 6 years. The longer this phase lasts, the longer the hair grows. Normally around 75% of the hairs on the head are in this phase
  • Catagen: lasts only 2 weeks and allows the follicle to renew itself
  • Telogen:or the resting phase. The follicle lies dormant and can last up to 4 months. Normally 10% of hairs are in this phase. After this phase anagen begins again The existing hair is pushed out of the hair follicle by the new growth and fall out.

In Male Pattern Baldness, follicles slowly srink and the anagen phase of the hairs is shortened.

At the same time, the telogen phase becomes longer. Shrinking of the follicles causes the shaft of the hair to thin with each cycle of growth. And over time, the anagen phase becomes so short that the new hairs do not even reach the surface of the skin.

Hair on the head continually grows without DHT. Hair in the armpit, pubic hair and beard hair cannot grow without the presence of androgens. DHT is entirely necessary for most hair growth but is detrimental to head hair growth. What has been scientifically proven is that DHT attaches to androgen receptors on hair follicles and, through an unexplained mechanism, genetically trigger the receptors to become less and less active.

The scientists are yet to understand  fully why DHT’s effects some individuals more than others and how DHT influences follicles to miniaturize. May be one day the mysteries of male pattern baldness will be solved.
